Passover, a culinary celebration

• During the days of Passover we’ll experience an Israeli and international culinary celebration.
  In addition, there will also be African-oriental touches.
  A team of expert chefs, cooks and pastry chefs will lead the kitchen.
  Part of the team will arrive on early flights from Israel.
  So the menu will be rich, fit for a king, true to the tradition of the holiday.
  All at a high standard of kashrut: “kosher mehadrin,” with uncompromising service and quality.

  The great and magnificent Passover Seder in the continent of Africa, “we’re all reclining,” will be held at the ROYAL SHAZA BEACH RESORT suite hotel.
  This will be the kosher, central hotel along Kenya’s coastal strip.
  So, the hotel is located in “the queen of the coastal cities” — Mombasa.

Kashrut:

• “Kosher mehadrin,” under the supervision of Rabbi Shlomo Katzin, matzah shmurah on Seder night and for anyone who requests it in advance throughout the holiday.
• The hotel will be reinforced with two additional kashrut supervisors alongside the existing kashrut supervisor who stays at the hotel year-round, arriving in advance for a general kosher certification of the hotel, dining rooms, restaurants and rooms.

Meals on the safari in Africa on Passover:

• Mobile kitchens, chefs and kitchen staff accompanied by a kashrut supervisor will go out with the travelers to the safari reserves and will accompany them with fresh, cooked meals throughout their stay in the safari — both at the lodges and at outdoor spreads within the reserves.

Day 1: Monday, 30.03.2026 — flying to Kenya — meeting in Mombasa.

Hello and welcome to Kenya — Karibu Kenya!
This is where your safari experience begins.
It’s going to be a vacation and touring week you won’t forget.

Upon landing, our representatives will meet you at the airport.
In addition, they’ll help you through the process: the visa counter, collecting luggage and meeting the driver.
From there we’ll accompany you until you arrive at the hotel.

A warm welcome and suite check-in await you at the hotel.
After settling in and resting, we’ll meet at the company desk in the lobby.
There you’ll get a short briefing on the week and tips for getting around.

After that, your vacation and touring week in Kenya begins.
Already on the first evening you’ll be able to go out and taste the nightlife the island offers.
Dinner.

Day 2: Tuesday, 31.03.2026 — boat trip to Funzi Island, the hidden island

Tens of thousands of Israelis have called the boat trip to Funzi Island “an unforgettable experience.”

After an early breakfast we’ll meet at the hotel reception at 07:00 and drive through the city of Mombasa toward the southern end of the city — to the ferry. Here, during rush hour, you’ll meet thousands of friendly Kenyans heading out on the ferries to work in the city. As you board the ferry you’ll see thousands of passengers lining up in perfect order on the sides of the ferry to cross with you to the other side. The ferry takes a few minutes to cross, and you arrive at the village of Likoni.

We’ll drive south through the villages populated by the Digo tribe, and all along the drive, from the sides of the road, you’ll be able to observe their economic way of life. The Digo people are small-scale farmers who grow an abundance of cashews, coconuts, mangoes, cassava, sugar cane and rice, and also specialize in fishing. We’ll cross the famous Diani Beach, ranked among the ten best beaches in the world. We’ll drive through stunning scenery for about half an hour at speed, almost to the Tanzania border. We’ll turn left and reach the village of Bodo. Bodo is a village on the shore of Funzi Bay, where your vehicles will park and you’ll board a Dhow (a traditional Arab sailing boat) for a whole day of amazing experiences.

Here you’ll have your first morning break since leaving the hotel — a quick African break of chai (tea) or kahawa (coffee), served with tasty African sweet potato.

Armed with your camera, you step forward and board the Dhow. As we begin sailing among the mangrove islands, you’ll watch and see the king fish, or the cormorant suddenly diving from the mangrove trees to catch a fish for breakfast or lunch.

After a short sail, Funzi Island appears in the distance. It’s a relatively large village, with a population of about 1,200 people comprising just 11 families — no televisions!!! Descendants of the Wakifundi, who are direct descendants of Persian Arabs and today belong to the Shirazi tribe. Here we’ll pass through the village and visit the elementary school, the village’s water well and the local market, and of course the local souvenir shop. The locals will be happy to welcome you, and may even agree to host you in their homes. You’ll watch how they cook, eat and sleep.

After the village visit we’ll return to the Dhow boat.
While the captain leads us toward the sandbank, we’ll enjoy the sea view and a cold drink.

During the sail you sometimes see pods of dolphins.
They come to play, chase after the boat, and steal the show in front of all the passengers.

The sandbank appears only at low tide.
Here you can swim, snorkel, or just wander and relax.
In addition, there are natural warm pools that feel like a jacuzzi.

At noon we’ll raise the sail and sail to Kinazini Island.
A splendid barbecue-style lunch awaits you there.

After the meal you can rest on the famous Lamu beds at the restaurant.
On the other hand, you can also go in for another short swim.
We’ll then return to the hotel.

Day 3: Wednesday, 01.04.2026 — a tour of the city of Mombasa and Passover eve

After breakfast, we’ll leave the beach hotel at 08:00 in the morning. A short drive to the city of Mombasa; the guide will accompany you throughout the tour and give explanations about Mombasa’s past and present. A very “vibrant” and active day awaits you throughout the city of Mombasa, in its historic and modern parts.

• First stop: “AKAMBA VILLAGE” — we’ll drive to the western side of Mombasa and visit the artisan village called “Akamba Village,” named for the “Akamba” tribe (one of the 42 tribes living in Kenya). The tribe is known for its talent for carving and creating the “tam tam” drum. In the village we’ll discover the talents of African art in carving, sculpting and painting, of dozens and sometimes hundreds of artists working under improvised wooden shelters. Here you’ll have a direct encounter with the artisans, and you’ll be able to talk with them, take photos, and even join them and try your hand at carving a 10-kilo elephant from mahogany wood using the traditional chisel. After touring among the artisans’ workshops, we’ll visit the village’s central gallery, where you’ll be able to purchase some of the artists’ works.

• After that: — a city tour — from the artisan village we’ll continue back to the city and drive along “Mijikenda Road,” which takes us to the old railway station (no longer in use), which was once the main hub of everything related to the transportation system in the early 20th century. From there we’ll drive to the old “Kilindini” road, today called “Moi Avenue,” named for Kenya’s second president. We’ll stop near the most famous landmark in the city of Mombasa, the giant “elephant tusks” built in the middle of the avenue. These were created in 1952 to welcome Her Majesty Princess Elizabeth on her first visit to Kenya. Right nearby, we’ll walk around “Uhuru Kenyatta” Park, named for Kenya’s first and legendary president, who also declared its independence (today his son serves as president, already in a second term), and was Kenya’s first president. We’ll wander among the giant mango trees, with countless fruit bats hanging in clusters from the branches.

• From there we’ll continue to: the “MARKITI” market in Mombasa — we’ll continue on “Digo” road and visit the Mombasa market known by locals as “Markiti,” which during the colonial period was reserved for European settlers’ meetings only, but has since Kenya’s independence become a beautiful fruit and vegetable market. Around the market building, all the streets have become shops packed full of goods, spices, textiles, clothing and more. We’ll wander and enjoy seeing the agricultural produce grown along the coastal region, as well as produce arriving from Kenya’s highland areas. Lots of tropical fruit like mango, banana, papaya, alongside other crops: tomatoes, potatoes, cashews, coffee and tea. Time to enjoy the red bananas.
• And finally — the old town — we’ll return to the bus and continue to Mombasa’s old town via “Nkrumah Road” (this street is also home to the company’s head offices, from which all activity is organized, in Israel, Kenya, Egypt and Rwanda). Here you’ll get explanations about the city’s rich culture and history. A tour among the narrow streets of the old town, among the old Arab houses and beautiful wooden balconies. On “Ndia Kuu” street you’ll see the beautiful architecture visible on the doors, windows and balconies of these houses, and then you’ll understand why the site is managed by UNESCO. We’ll visit the old fort known as “Fort Jesus,” which loomed over the entrance to Mombasa’s harbors and thereby effectively controlled the city. Today it’s a museum rather than a weapons base, and displays architectural work from the 15th century. It was built by the Portuguese to protect their business empire along the east coast of Africa; the use of the name “Jesus,” and talk of the Portuguese presenting themselves as missionaries, served only as a cover to prevent strong business competition.

From there we’ll head back to the hotel to prepare for Passover eve.

Day 4: Thursday, 02.04.2026 — Passover

Holiday prayers, meals, activities at the hotel and its surroundings.

Evening prayer marking the end of the holiday day, dinner with a rich meat barbecue accompanied by a performance and local African melodies.

Day 5: Friday, 03.04.2026 — Marine Park, “into the villages,” and Shabbat eve

After breakfast, departure for a Marine Park sea activity. The sea activity includes snorkeling, glass-bottom boats, walking in the water at high and low tide, and an encounter with sea creatures.

We’ll continue to a fascinating “into the villages” tour and the experience of life in Kenya. We’ll drive through giant, endless plantations of sisal plants (used to make ropes and aloe vera preparations) toward the villages of the Giriama tribe. The Giriama tribe is the largest of the nine tribal groups making up the “Mijikenda” community — the tribal communities living along Kenya’s coastal strip. We’ll visit a local school for orphans to interact with the school’s staff and the children, who will be happy to have your visit. You’ll receive so much love from these children, who rely mainly on local volunteers to maintain the school. From there we’ll continue to the village of Giriama; we’ll walk through the village, go out to meet and spend time with the local residents, and learn about the ethnicity of the Giriama community — they may even honor you with fresh coconut from the tree. The adventure of touring the village paths and bush trails will let you experience and enjoy the amazing ways of village life in Giriama.

We’ll return to the hotel to rest and prepare for Shabbat eve.

Day 6: Shabbat, 04.04.2026 — Shabbat Kodesh

Shabbat morning: wake up to a pastoral Shabbat morning, coffee and cake before prayers, Shacharit prayer with the Torah reading at the hotel synagogue, Kiddush, cakes and a second meal. Activities at the hotel and its surroundings. Mincha prayer and the third meal: a varied meal. Evening prayer, Motzei Shabbat, Havdalah and Melaveh Malka: right after evening prayer and Havdalah we’ll hold a Melaveh Malka with a rich barbecue accompanied by a performance and local African melodies.

3 days of much more than just a safari

Day 7: Sunday, 05.04.2026 (safari, first day) — Tsavo East reserve.

After an early breakfast (06:00 in the morning) we’ll leave the hotel and board the safari vehicles. We’ll cross Mombasa and drive on the Mombasa-Nairobi road. Here you’ll already start to see Kenya’s landscapes. The road passes among the picturesque villages populated by the Giriama tribe — a glimpse into the local community’s economic way of life. These are mostly small-scale farmers growing coconut, cashews, cassava and a lot of corn. At this hour we’ll see tens of thousands of locals leaving the villages toward the big city to look for work, and especially schoolchildren walking many kilometers to make it to class on time.

Right upon entering the reserve we’ll discover the wonders of the national park, which is part of Tsavo National Park, the largest park in Kenya (22,812 km²) and one of the largest in Africa! Tsavo East is separated from the western part by the railway line connecting Mombasa and Nairobi. There’s no fence and no separation between the two parks, which allows the animals to move freely from one side to the other.

The tour winds among vast plains interwoven with forests overlooking the fascinating scenery of the “Taita Hills” and the impressive “Yatta Plateau” — meaning “elephant” in the Waliangulu language, a community of hunter-gatherers who once lived in this area. We’ll encounter hippos, one of the most interesting animals in nature. Touring the back of the park is a rewarding experience, with opportunities to see lions, leopards, large herds of buffalo and more.

We’ll stop for lunch and continue touring the reserve. We’ll drive to the camp (lodge) for check-in and an overnight stay.

Day 8: Monday, 06.04.2026 (safari, second day) — a tour of the “Taita Hills” reserve.

We’ll spend this day in a very special reserve — the “Taita Hills” reserve. We’ll set out at 6:30, before breakfast (taking a hot drink for the road), jump into the safari vehicles to catch “morning on the safari.” The whole safari wakes up for another day of foraging for food. It’s time to meet some of the nocturnal animals still active in the park, who “stayed up a bit late” — animals almost never seen during the day: hyenas, foxes, genets and leopards. We’ll return to the lodge for a continental breakfast, and afterward continue touring the reserve.

The “Taita Hills” reserve is actually the highlight of the trip. The reserve is the corridor through which animals from both reserves (Tsavo West and Tsavo East) pass, so in a relatively small area we’ll see a large concentration of animals.

The “Taita Hills” reserve is in fact a privately owned initiative. The reserve has been managed for more than 40 years and has an excellent reputation as one of the leading nature areas in the region, thanks to its committed approach to wildlife conservation. The park’s relatively small size guarantees viewing a very large number of animals in a small area. More than 50 species of large mammals inhabit the reserve. The scenery is dramatic, and all the wildlife of the plains is found here. The park is home to elephants, lions, various types of antelope, cheetahs, leopards, buffalo, giraffes and more. Still, most of the reserve is unfenced, so the number of wild animals varies throughout the year according to natural environmental factors. The habitat changes between vegetation types and low scrub to acacia tree areas in the open spaces. The reserve has more than 300 bird species, some of which live in the reserve, while for others the reserve serves as a migration stop where they gather strength for their journey between continents.

Day 9: Tuesday, 07.04.2026 (third safari day): continued touring of the Taita Hills reserve and return to Mombasa

The day starts early, even before breakfast. We’ll board the safari vehicles and head deep into the reserve to try to catch some of the shy nocturnal creatures on their way back to their dens. It’s also an opportunity to spot the big cats teaching their young cubs the ways of the hunt.

We’ll observe two encounters, between a reserve going to sleep and a reserve waking up for another stormy day of wild scenery and predators and prey searching for food. We’ll return to the lodge for breakfast, and prepare to head out toward the reserve gate.

From there we’ll continue driving back to our beach hotel in the coastal city of Mombasa. (Arrival in the afternoon hours)

Day 10: Wednesday, 08.04.2026 — the seventh day of Passover

Option afterward to go out to one of the entertainment spots the island offers.

Day 11: Thursday, 09.04.2026 — return to Israel

Wake up for a good breakfast, pack our things and check out of the hotel. Departure toward Mombasa Airport for the return flight to Israel. Welcome back to Israel.
